The opening date for London’s Museum of Youth Culture has officially been announced.
Located in the basement of a new-build housing block in Camden, the new museum will tell the story of British youth subcultures throughout the years, from ravers and rudeboys to emos, mods and rockers.
The museum has an 100,000-item archive including leather jackets, ravers’ badges and modern day school leavers’ hoodies.
As well as showcasing items, the Museum of Youth Culture also features a cafe area, as well as a space for gigs and events.

One of the people behind the museum is Jon Swinstead, who began collecting photos of youth subcultures over 30 years ago. The idea of turning his finds into a museum came from Jamie Brett, with the pair launching a massive call-out which resulted in people from all over the UK sending in memorabilia from their teen days.
The museum was originally scheduled to open last December but its launch was pushed back following the discovery of a leak in the venue. However, all has been resolved and the Museum of Youth Culture is set to open on Friday 15th May.
The museum will be free to enter, but tickets will be available for special events.
Jamie Brett, co-founder of the Museum of Youth Culture, said: “Everything in this museum exists because people cared enough to save it. Flyers kept in drawers. Photos stored on hard drives. Stories shared before they disappeared. We’ve poured years into protecting this culture because it belongs to the people who built it. Giving it a permanent home is about honouring that effort.”
