With V&A East Museum set to open its doors in Stratford real soon, details of its very first exhibition have been revealed.
Titled ‘The Music Is Black: A British Story’, V&A East’s inaugural exhibition will explore Black music’s impact on British culture from 1900 to today – from lover’s rock and Brit funk to grime, drill and 2-tone.
Featuring a mix of sound, film, photography, fashion, instruments and personal artefacts, the exhibition will include over 200 objects to shine a light on the artists, creators and communities that have shaped Britain’s musical identity.
Among the objects and stories on display are Jme’s Super Nintendo, fashion worn by Little Simz and Seal, the piano used by the first Black artist to secure a UK Number 1 and much more.
The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 18th April when the V&A East Museum officially opens for business.
Located in Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, V&A East will be dedicated to championing the power of creativity and exploring leading voices in contemporary culture. It comes complete with two galleries, a major exhibition space, restaurant, shops and spaces for social gathering and events.
‘The Music Is Black’ is due to be a popular attraction and will set the bar for V&A’s following exhibitions.
