London’s Tate Modern is gearing up to host the first UK exhibition tracing the development of modern art in Nigeria.
Featuring over 250 works by more than 50 artists including Ben Enwonwun and El Anatsui, ‘Nigerian Modernism’ will celebrate the creative forces who revolutionised art in Nigeria in the 20th century.
Spanning a period of 50 years, the exhibition will begin in the 1940s where there were growing calls for decolonisation in Africa, and will follow Nigeria’s journey to independence and beyond through the work of artists who responded to the country’s changing political and social landscape. It will feature a range of works from sculptures and textiles to poetry and ceramics.
The exhibition will end with a spotlight on Uzo Egounu, whose Stateless People paintings will be reunited for the first time in 40 years.
Nigerian Modernism is set to open at Tate Modern on Nigeria’s 65th independence day on 1st October 2025, and will run until 10th May 2026.
